The two-millionth Land Rover Defender rolled off the Solihull production line in 2015. Land Rover marked the milestone with a unique vehicle, built by hand and signed by everyone who worked on the line. I designed the commemorative branding.
The branding needed to honour 67 years of production history without tipping into nostalgia. The vehicle was going to auction for charity (Red Cross and Born Free Foundation) so it also needed to work in a fundraising context: on a stage, under photography, alongside partner logos.
The design sits on the vehicle’s bodywork and packaging. It needed to be legible at distance (event photography, auction catalogue) and hold detail at close range. I balanced these two demands through weight and spacing decisions that favoured clarity over decoration.
The vehicle sold at auction for a record price. The branding appeared across global press coverage, exhibition displays, and charity communications.
